Car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz calls 85.000 cars back in the United States. The cars are Mercedes C and E class. Cause is the possibility of problems with the steering.

This is quite a large callback and might hurt Mercedes’ reputation. The callback is caused due to possible problems with the steering systems. The origin of this problem is caused by the loss of fluids which could causes the power steering to fail while driving. With these problems, car drivers have a higher risk of losing control of the car. This is what Mercedes announced Saturday evening.

Owners of a Mercedes C-class build in 2010 and the newest version of the E-class can let their car be checked by the Mercedes dealer for free.

It happened more often this year that cars have been called back by the car manufacturer. The callback by Toyota was a major headline this year. Around 6 million cars of Toyota were affected with the gas-pedal problem in the United States alone and later this year the problem also arisen for Toyota cars in Europe. Later this year Toyota had to call back another 1,13 million Corolla’s in the United States due to a technical problem. The problem was caused by a weakness in the car’s electronics that could cause the engine to fail or not start at all.

Also Mazda called back around half a million cars worldwide this year. Noteworthy is that it was also caused due to problems with the power steering, like Mercedes.

We have seen it a lot this year that cars are being called back by car manufacturers due to technical problems. It might even damage the reputation of the car manufacturer. However, if one chooses not to call back cars with technical failures, that might be more dangerous than the loss in reputation of calling back cars. What is your opinion about this?
